In 1860, a wealthy plantation owner made a wager that he could smuggle a shipload of enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to Alabama, even though importation had been banned in 1808. Upon succeeding, the boat, the Clotilda, was burned, sunk, and presumed to be lost to the annals of myth. After more than a century of speculation of the ship’s existence, the remnants are unearthed in 2019, thrusting the small community and its unique history into the national spotlight. Documentarian Margaret Brown returns to her hometown of Mobile to present a portrait of a community fighting to preserve their own stories and examine what justice looks like today.
