$892.34 was the amount of money owed by the Department of Veteran Affairs to Marine veteran Brian Easley (John Boyega) when he walked into a Wells Fargo bank in Atlanta threatening to detonate a bomb in 2017. Living in a $25-a-day motel room, estranged from his wife and unable to provide for his beloved daughter, Brian finds himself alone and voiceless, caught up in a ceaseless bureaucratic nightmare. Refusing the bank employees repeated entreaties to transfer the funds, what Brian wants is the opportunity to express his frustrations on a national stage in the hopes that Veteran Affairs will remedy the error. Tensions boil over as media and law enforcement close in on Brian, whose only hope of resolution lies in the hands of a sympathetic negotiator.
Programmer’s Note: Michael K. Williams is outstanding here in his final film role. John Boyega (Star Wars) gives a powerfully calibrated and deeply humane performance as a decent but troubled man pushed to his limits.
