Everyone knows the lyrics to the iconic song that has become an anthem for working women everywhere. But 9 TO 5 was initially conceived by Jane Fonda as a drama about the issues that women faced in the workplace. After innumerable rejections, Fonda decided to package its feminist message as a screwball comedy, and 9 TO 5 became one of the biggest box office draws of 1980. Directors Camille Hardman and Gary Lane chronicle the making of the landmark comedy and trace its impact on popular culture, gender inequality, and labor rights. Featuring interviews with Fonda and her co-stars Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Dabney Coleman, as well as insights from activists and office workers.
